Kindergarten and first-grade students at Stadium Drive arrived at school on Feb. 29 with mismatched shoes, crazy hair styles and clashing patterns displayed in their outfits.
The choices weren’t accidental — the fun fashion faux-pas were part of the students’ celebration of “Wacky Wednesday.” The event was part of a week of activities focused around Dr. Seuss, whose birthday is celebrated on March 2.
The shenanigans were taken from the pages of Seuss’ book “Wacky Wednesday,” where a youngster wakes up one morning to find the world a little off-kilter and no one noticing anything amiss.
The kindergarten and first-grade classes celebrated with odd outfits that featured details like oversized glasses, wigs and backward shirts.
Barb Gonda’s kindergartners celebrated the day with personal reading time, sharing stories with fourth-grade reading buddies and eating a snack.
“Dr. Seuss is so delightfully wacky that he’s a hit at every age. When our fourth-grade buddies visited the classroom this morning, they enjoyed the stories as much as my kindergartners,” Gonda said.
First-graders joined the fun as well, creating Thing 1 and 2 and Cat in the Hat crafts.
In Melissa Struharik’s first-grade class, students tackled new ideas in math and reading in the context of Seuss. The students completed math plotting and graphing, participated in a Seuss listening center and learned about schema and inference to gather deeper information in a story.
“Among all the craziness that is Dr. Seuss, we’re really learning some serious stuff,” Struharik explained.
