Math Counts team second at YSU event

The Poland Middle School’s Math Counts team finished second out of 26 teams at Youngstown State University on Feb. 9. The team consisted of Charlie Dwyer, Brendan Gage, Mariah Mrofchak and Nicole Ruse.
Dwyer and Gage also placed in the top 16 overall, putting them in the head-to-head Countdown Round competition.
The team was honored at a banquet on Feb. 23 before it headed to the state competition in Columbus today.
“I’m extremely proud of the mathletes for all their hard work and dedication to math, including the students who attended the YSU Math Counts competition as individual or alternate competitors,” said coach Janice Hohloch.
These students include Sarah Albert, Frank Castro, Kate Landry, Noah Lee, Evan Montgomery, Jennifer Mullally, Connor O’Kane, Jillian Penman, Kristen Thompson and Justin Tremonti.
In addition to the Math Counts competition, members of Math Club also participate in the annual American Mathematics Competition. This year’s top competitors were Jacob Hockensmith, Keyton Graff, Charlie Dwyer, Evan Montgomery and Connor O’Kane.
Math Club at Poland Middle School is held from early October through March and is open to all seventh and eighth-graders. Students meet weekly before school to prepare for competitions.
Math Counts consists of various rounds, including the Sprint Round, Target Round, Team Round and Countdown Round. For more information on the Math Counts competition, visit www.mathcounts.org.
