Korey Frost qualified for last weekend's state tournament as a sophomore. He wrestled two matches in Columbus.

Canfield sophomore Korey Frost got his first taste of the state wrestling tournament last weekend in Columbus. While he didn’t come away with a victory, he experienced what it was like to battle the best in the state.

“We are proud of Korey,” said Canfield coach Dean Conley. “What an accomplishment to make it to Columbus as a sophomore. He is the first sophomore to compete in Columbus for us since 2004 (Jarek Esarco at 189).”

Frost competed in what is arguably the toughest weight class in Division II. Seven of the 16 competitors at 113 pounds were returning state placers. In addition, the bracket included a 2011 junior high state champion.

“We lost a tough one in the first round and really wrestled well against two-time state placer Joey Miller from Carrollton,” explained Conley.

The state champion at 113 pounds was Nathan Tomasello, who is currently ranking No. 1 in the nation. The other three wrestlers who qualified from the Alliance District, where Frost advanced from, placed first, second and eighth.

Frost finished the season at 31-6. He is a two-time district qualifier and one-time state qualifier.
