To celebrate Dr. Seuss’ 108th birthday and to begin their all-school read, C.H. Campbell Elementary School students sang “Happy Birthday” to the iconic children’s book author March 2.

The all-school read was part of the school’s read-a-thon, during which the students raise money to help support the school by reading books. Each student’s goal was to read 100 books or chapters at their reading level.

To begin the event, C.H. Campbell Elementary School Principal Travis Lavery read “The Sneetches” to the students.

With the book projected on a screen in the gym, the students could follow along as Lavery read the book aloud.

“Growing up, Dr. Seuss was my absolute favorite author and illustrator,” Lavery told the students. “And ‘The Sneetches’ is one of my favorite books.”

But, before Lavery started to read the book, he told the students he felt something was missing. And with that, he walked to the stage and, much to the delight of the children, pulled out a Cat in the Hat hat and put it on his head. Now he was ready to read to the students.

“‘The Sneetches’ is one of Dr. Seuss’ lesser-known books, but its message can be applied to many issues our students are facing today, such as bullying,” Lavery said.

When Lavery was finished reading the book, the students remained in the gym for about 30 minutes for the all-school read.

Each student brought with them their own book to read, with many of them choosing books written by Dr. Seuss.
