Car catches fire

NEWTON FALLS

An elderly man was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital after several cars burst into flames in front of a house at 2362 S. Canal St. in Newton Township. The Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office said Braceville Township firefighters responded about 4 p.m. Wednesday and found the man unconscious behind the wheel with his foot on the accelerator, which caused the car to overheat and catch fire. The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV, identified the man as Joseph Sofranik. On Thursday, the hospital said Sofranik was in the cardiac unit of the hospital but was not willing to give his condition.

The Historic Preservation Committee of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society board of trustees will conduct its seventh annual Historic Preservation Awards program to honor those who take an active role in preserving historic buildings, sites and districts.

Historic-preservation projects in Trumbull and Mahoning counties are eligible for recognition in appropriate categories. Award winners will be announced during Historic Preservation Week in May and recognized by MVHS members at the annual meeting in June.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Youngstown, working in collaboration with Catholic Charities USA, the domestic-disaster agency of U.S. Catholic Bishops, is accepting donations to assist families and communities impacted by the recent severe storms and tornadoes.

Catholic Charities USA will use donations to support local Catholic Charities and other Catholic-sponsored agencies working in these impacted areas with short- and long-term support to rebuild.

Christmas decorations on graves at St. Stephen Cemetery, Warren Avenue, must be removed by March 17. Those that remain will be discarded. Spring decorations that have been placed will not be removed.

Free movie night

The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District will have a free movie night at 6:30 p.m. today at the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center, 520 W. Main Street.

This month’s feature is “A Murder of Crows,” a documentary illustrating the intelligence of crows that originally aired on PBS as part of the “Nature” series. The film is a wildlife documentary and could include scenes involving reproduction and predation.
