The Canfield High School Players will present the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” March 29-31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Canfield High School auditorium.
The production is a high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston. It’s the zany 1920s musical that took Broadway by storm, winning six TONY Awards in 2002, including Best Musical.
Based on the popular movie, the stage version includes a full score of new songs and dance numbers. A unique feature for this production includes the rental, rather than construction of, the set. Canfield Players is using a Mayfield Heights, Ohio, company, Falcon, Inc. for the set and a number of the props such as the laundry carts and stenographers’ desks, key parts of the musical.
The set for Canfield’s production will be utilized in Mayfield Heights a few weeks before Canfield’s show, then will go on to California. The set, which goes together with a system of bolts, arrives on a semi-truck for load in, which will occur in Canfield March 17 and takes about six hours to set up.
“Producing a quality musical is our goal and the set design is a most important aspect. Renting the set and other key props helps us focus on other parts of the production. So this is a win-win situation,” said Director Becky Heikkinen.
The cast of more than 60 features Katelyn Lisowski as Millie Dillmount and Spencer Saylor as Jimmy Smith.
