The Jewish Community Center J Caf program from noon to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday features Dr. Nancy L. Gantt, a general surgeon specializing in the care of women with breast cancer and a breast- cancer survivor herself.

Co-director of the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, Dr. Gantt will tell her story and talk about treatments available in the Mahoning Valley for women who have breast cancer. Lunch will be served.

The cost is $7 for Jewish Community Center members and $10 for non- members. Call 330-746-3251, ext. 195.

Acts of Courage nominees sought

YOUNGSTOWN

The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is seeking nominations for its 2012 Acts of Courage Awards. Nominees must reside or be employed in Mahoning or Trumbull counties. The heroic event may have occurred anywhere between April 1, 2011, and April 1, 2012.

To nominate a local hero who has saved a life, call 330-392-2551. The nomination deadline is May 1. Award recipients will be honored during a dinner hosted by the Red Cross.

Examples of potential nominees could be a person who entered a burning house to rescue a trapped family; a passer-by who pulled a drowning person to safety, or a neighbor who administered CPR to a stranger.

Cancer 101 program

MINERAL RIDGE

First Presbyterian Church, 3654 Main St., in Mineral Ridge is offering “Nurse Chat” on March 18 at 12:45 p.m. “Cancer 101” will be presented by Nicole McMullen, a board-certified oncology pharmacist at the McDowell Cancer Center at Akron General Medical Center.

“Cancer 101” provides a general overview of cancer including types of cancer, treatment options and basic information on surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The program is free. Refreshments will be served.

Ostomy support meeting planned

GIRARD

St. Elizabeth Health Center trauma surgeon Dr. Gregory S. Huang is the featured speaker for the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group meeting Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the HM Home Care office, 979 Tibbetts-Wick Road, Girard.

The meeting is free and open to ostomy patients, families and friends. Refreshments are provided. Parking is free. For information, call 330-480-3440.

Cortland Banks helps Second Harvest

Cortland Banks is teaming up with Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley this month to generate donations of food and funds for those in need.

During March, Cortland Banks’ Mahoning and Trumbull county branches will make a donation to Second Harvest for every checking account opened by a new deposit customer or referred by an existing customer; and on behalf of each new customer in the Mahoning Valley who mentions Harvest for Hunger, Cortland Banks will make a $25 donation to the food bank. Also, community members are invited to drop off nonperishable food items at any Cortland Banks branch in the Mahoning Valley during March.

For every new checking account opened at Cortland Banks during March, the food bank will be able to distribute $375 worth of food to hungry people in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, said Michael Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest.
