Liberty investigating two suspicious fires

Liberty is investigating two fires about 12 hours apart that burned to the ground an apartment complex in the southern portion of the township.
Fire Chief Michael Durkin called the fires suspicious.
He said the first fire at 3006 Green Acres Drive started about 2:45 p.m. Sunday. It caused $75,000 worth of damage and forced the eviction of its residents.
Then about 3 a.m. Monday morning, the fire department responded to the same apartment and found “flames through the roof,” Durkin said.
“We sprayed thousands and thousands of gallons of water on it,” Durkin said of the earlier fire. “I couldn’t imagine it rekindling on its own.”
Four additional fire departments responded to the second fire from Youngstown, Vienna, Girard and Brookfield.
He said there were no injuries in either fire.
Durkin plans to have a fire marshal investigate the fires today but said it would probably be hard to determine a cause because the apartment complex collapsed.
In all, the fires caused $245,000 worth of damage.
Only three of the units were occupied, Durkin said.
Durkin said Red Cross is taking care of the residents.
