ELECTION UPDATE | Gains beats Macejko

After a sometimes brutal campaign, Mahoning County Prosecutor Paul J. Gains won the Democratic party's primary tonight.

With 273 of 273 precincts reporting, incumbent Gains beat Youngstown Prosecutor Jay Macejko with 16,385 votes to Macejko's 15,824. These results are unofficial.

Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman David Betras conceded just before the last votes were tallied. His Mahoning Democratic Party had endorsed Macejko.

"It's a close race, but Paul won. Now, I sit down, have a talk and make up with him," Betras said.

There are also about 200 provisional ballots that have not been counted.
