Women’s history month Events at YSU


Youngstown State University will observe Women’s History Month throughout March with a variety of special events. All events are open to the public.

Today through March 30: Contraception in the 20th Century, an exhibition with historic artifacts on contraception on display at the Rose Melnick Museum on Wick Avenue.

Wednesday: 4 p.m., “Pretty Women and Mad Men” will be shown in Room 3423 of Williamson Hall.

Thursday: 5:30 p.m., International Women’s Day on the fifth floor of Maag Library. Panel discussion with wine and cheese.

March 21: 5:30 p.m., “Reproductive and Sexual Health: Sleeping with Uncle Sam.” Lecture by Alexandra Lord of the National Park Service in McKay Auditorium in Beeghly Hall.

March 22: 4 p.m., “The Education of Shelby Knox.” Screening and discussion of the 2005 documentary in McKay Auditorium in Beeghly Hall.

March 23: 4 p.m., “Sex + Money: A National Search for Human Worth.” Auditorium Room 132 of DeBartolo Hall. Screening and discussion with members of the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative.

March 26: 10 a.m., “Virture, Vice and Contraband: A History of Contraception in America.” Rose Melnick Museum. Lecture by James Edmonson of the Dittrick Medical History Museum at Case Western University.

March 28: Noon, The Issues of Today’s Women. Main Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley, 305 Wick Ave.

March 28: 3 p.m., “Retirement Security, Women’s Security.” Channing Hall, First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, 1105 Elm St.

March 28: 5:30 p.m., “Of Clubs and Whiskers: Gender, Honor and Violence in the Brazilian Backlands of Ceara, 1845 to 1889.” Fifth floor of YSU’s Maag Library.

March 30: 1 p.m., “Sin by Silence.” In YSU McDonough Museum of Art. Screening and discussion of the film, co-sponsored by United Purpose II.
