Report: Unclear what prompted Yellowstone mauling
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — An investigation into the second of two fatal grizzly bear maulings last summer at Yellowstone National Park is unable to conclude if the same bear was responsible both deaths.
But DNA evidence shows the sow that killed California hiker Brian Matayoshi in July and one of its cubs also attacked Michigan hiker John Wallace in August.
The report by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee released today says evidence of two other bears were found 65 feet away and 492 feet away from Wallace’s body.
The sow linked to both deaths was euthanized last fall.
The report says Wallace stopped hiking and may have been eating a snack when he was attacked the morning of Aug. 25.
It is not clear why the bear or bears attacked him.
