‘We know what we want to do’: Hubbard girls eye state bowling title
During the boys’ district bowling tournament last Saturday at Twin Star lanes in Kent, Hubbard bowlers Amanda Wise, Brittany Ferrara and Lauren Miller were acting as cheerleaders, not just for their boys squad, but for all the area teams.
The next day, Wise, Ferrara and Miller returned to bowl in the girls competition and finished first.
Now they need someone cheering on their behalf as the Lady Eagles attempt to become state champions, starting this morning at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
Hubbard was the team champion at district, beating second place Massillon Perry, 3761-3689.
The Lady Eagles finished runner-up at Wayne Webb’s last year when they lost to Memorial St. Mary’s.
This will be Hubbard’s fifth consecutive state appearance.
“We know who we’re going to bowl against [the teams to beat] and we know what we want to do,” coach Carol Kozbial said.
Hubbard’s lineup includes: seniors Samantha Dudley and Amanda Wess, juniors Brittany Ferrara, twins Jenna and Sarah Wise, Lauren Miller and Christina Leckfor and sophomore Miranda Romano.
“I want to get into the finals,” Kozbial said of the objective for the team. “Our first goal is to get into that final eight — make it to that elite eight. After that, my team usually fares very well regardless of the team they’re put up against.”
Then she added: “I could actually say that I’d almost bet my house on the first round because they come out very strong, very confident. They know what their mission is because we talk about this all year long: going back to that one-two spot last year.”
