Dana ensembles plan 2 free concerts

YOUNGSTOWN

The Dana School of Music Composers Ensemble (Robert Rollin, director) and YSU Early Music Ensemble (Randall Goldberg, director) will present two free concerts Wednesday: 12:15 p.m. at the Butler Institute of American Art, and 8 p.m. in Bliss Recital Hall on the Youngstown State University campus.

Several world premieres will be presented by the Composers Ensemble. These include three trombone trios: “On the Run” by freshman Michael Lynch; “Captain’s Log” by sophomore Jesse Martin; and new work by junior Samantha Hogan. Senior Carol Ann Smolka will premiere her new song, “I Still Dream,” accompanied by Robert Rollin, piano. Richard Zacharias, Youngstown-area composer and member of the New Music Guild, will have his String Quartet No. 2 premiered. Guest flautist and Dana alumna Michelle Murray will perform Edgar Var ®se’s “Density 21.5.” Dana faculty Gwyneth Rollin, violin, and Rollin, piano, will present “Lyric Counterpoint on a Theme” by Warshawsky.

The Early Music portion of the concerts includes music composed for a variety of domestic settings.

Clay classes for adults at museum

EAST LIVERPOOL

The Museum of Ceramics, 400 E. Fifth St., will have clay classes for adults, a three-day seminar, March 8-10 from 10 a.m. to noon each day. Class size is limited to eight. The $25 fee includes supplies. Each participant will be able to make three items. Firing will take place later.

The class focus will be on hand building techniques including the use of coils and slabs. Instructor will be Barrie Archer, who has taught and made art for decades. He has taught every ceramic class at the museum in recent years.
