Canfield wrestler Korey Frost (31-4) pinned his way through the first day of the Division II district tournament last Friday. Two wins on day one set him up for a possible district title and a berth to the state tournament.

The title didn’t happen, but he’ll take the consolation prize — a fourth-place finish and a spot among the top 16 wrestlers in the state at 113 pounds.

“It’s really an honor,” Canfield coach Dean Connelly said. “This is one of the toughest districts in the state. We’re all kind of cursed by geography. If you want to be part of this sport, you want to do it against the best kids.”

Frost, a sophomore, didn’t need long to win his first district match on Friday. He pinned Collinwood’s Richard Stokes in just 47 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals. He also turned his next opponent, Aurora’s Sean Armstrong, pinning him in 1:48 to move to the semis.

He fell to Lake Catholic’s Anthony Tutolo 17-6 in the semifinals and dropped to the consolation bracket needing just one win to clinch a state tourney berth.

Frost delivered with a 5-3 victory over University School’s Walker Chieffe.

In the battle for third place, Frost lost a 3-0 decision to Canton South’s D.J. Schoeppner. But he claimed the fourth and final state berth.

Anthony Spencer, Curtis Burns each wrestled at the district tournament and went 1-2. Shawn Williams was 0-2 in a tough weight class.
