Poland diver competes at state championships
Poland High junior Celia Melillo finished in 22nd place in the Division II girls state diving championships last Wednesday.
Melillo finished with a score of 140.30 at the state meet, after having qualified with a fifth-place finish at the district meet the week before.
Seven other members of the Poland swim team competed at the Northeast District Championships at Cleveland State University.
For the girls, Kayleigh Lavorini, Becca Stewart, Maddie Evan and Zoe Sommers placed 11th in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:46.88 and placed 13th in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:00.21.
Stewart also placed 24th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:07.56 and she placed 24th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:40.31. Evan swam in the 100 backstroke and placed 16th with a time of 1:05.16. Sommers placed 21st in the 200 IM with a time of 2:26.44 and was 29th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.87.
Only the top two places in each swimming event, then the next 16 best times at-large from all districts moved on to the state competition.
For the Poland boys, Matt Misko and Anthony Lattanzio both competed in the 100 breaststroke. Misko placed 28th with a time of 1:10.83 and Lattanzio finished 29th with a time of 1:11.19.
Diver Nicolette Kreatsoulas placed 11th with a score of 252.25.
