Middle school wrestlers advance to state

Boardman Center wrestler Mario Graziani (114 pounds) and Glenwood’s Danny Boerio (120) each qualified for the OAC Junior High state wrestling tournament, based on their performance at the recent district tourney.

Graziani won the 114-pound district championship, while Boerio placed seventh at 120 pounds. Both wrestlers qualified for the state tournament March 10-11 at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown.

Weigh-ins at the Covelli Centre will be March 10 and the first round of wrestling begins the next day at 10 a.m.

Graziani enters state with a 36-2 record and looks to to improve upon last year’s sixth-place state finish. Boerio added four more wins to his season record (30-5) at districts, three of them by pin.

Three other Spartans competed the district tournament. Center’s Vito Marzano competed in the 102-pound weight class and Carlo DeNiro wrestled at 114. DeNiro won two matches, his first by pin over Austintown Middle School’s Anthony Imburgia.

Glenwood’s Nick Patoray competed in the 120-pound weight class.
