Lloyd students spent some quality time with dads, grandpas and male mentors during the school’s “Dad’s Night Out” event Feb. 15.

Each student and dad duo was given an unassembled birdfeeder project that included four wood slats, string, nails, wire mesh and birdfeed. Once the teams began their feeders, Lloyd’s all-purpose room echoed with loud hammering and good-natured laughs.

Larry Marteney enjoyed the event with his granddaughter, Lloyd second-grader MaKenna Darby.

“We make lots of things together, like today’s project and other little toys I’ve fashioned for her,” said Marteney.

“I’m having a lot of fun. My dad was busy today, but I’m really happy that I had my grandpa to come with me today,” Darby added.

The projects offered students and their father figures a chance to use teamwork. Many of the dads showed their kids the proper form for swinging a hammer, a skill that lasts a lifetime.

Scott Baker fashioned a bird feeder with his daughter, Bailey, during the event.

“We have a bird-feeder at home already, but I like that we’re adding to the collection,” Bailey Baker explained.

“We’re going to wait until spring to put them up and then do a little bird watching. It will be a nice thing for us to do together,” Scott Baker said.
