BGMS boys lash Liberty
The Glenwood eighth-grade boys capped off their season with a 48-21 win over Liberty to improve 11-2. Eight Spartans scored in the victory: Gavin Dill (10), Preston Stitt (8), Tim Captain, Craig Wawrosch (6), Brandon Rozzi, Jamison Lytle and Devan Cool with five each and Brandon Fuese with two points. All players contributed on the BGMS defense, which held Liberty to only six first half points. The Spartans were coached by Jim Bennett.
The seventh-grade boys finished the season with a victory as they beat Liberty 33-20. Leading the way for the Spartans was JR Ryan who scored 15 points. Bryce Richey add six points, while Nick Augustine, Pierre Grizzard, Mark Smaldino, Travis Koontz, Dante Colaluca, Anthony Davanzo and Sean Birchfield all had two points. The Spartans finished the season with a nine game winning streak and an overall record of 11-2.
BGMS girls sweep Liberty
Boardman Glenwood’s eighth-grade girls basketball team closed out the year with a 25-24 victory over Liberty. Krista Johnson made the winning shot with seven seconds left in the game.
Bailey Brandt led all the scorers with 10 points. Johnson scored eight, while Natalie Wilson had six and Marissa Hanna had two.
The team finished the season with a 10-3 record. They were coached by Andy Wade and Lauren Susany.
The seventh-grade girls ended an exciting season with a 29-4 victory over Liberty. Leading scorers were Lauren Pavlansky (11), Aniyuh Spann (1), Cailyn Campana (2), Alexis Stutz (2) and Maryssa Wagner (2).
A strong defense was key to the win and Faith Clear, Taylor Halowell, Alaina Hufnagel, Alexis Stutz and Charlotte Voytko were the catalyst to the success of the team.
The girls ended the season 7-6. They were coached by John DePietro and Courtney Pilch.
BGMS wrestlers take second
Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s wrestling team ended its season at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament with six wrestlers on the podium and a second-place team finish in Division II.
Sam Varga, Mark Gotham and Tyler Stolar placed in the top eight. Matt Maroni, Conner Kochansky and Nick Patoray placed sixth. AJ Pantaleo and Tyler Dempsey each won their final match by a pin to place fifth.
Danny Boerio placed fourth and ended the season with team-leading 26 wins and 17 pins.
Nominations accepted for Boardman HOF
Nominations are being accepted for the Boardman High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
They should be submitted to the school’s athletic office at 7777 Glenwood Ave., Boardman, Ohio 44512.
Golf event set for this summer
The annual Pink Ribbon Gold Classic will be held at Tippecanoe Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Pink Ribbon committee will also sponsor a bus trip this spring to a local casino. Watch for further details on both of these events.
