Spectacular single-car crash sends 2 passengers to hospital
YOUNGSTOWN
A car northbound on Market Street swerved in front of another car, lost control, hit a utility pole, snapping it off, ran up a guy wire, flipped over several times, landed upside down on Avondale Avenue and caught fire.
The crash occurred about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.
The occupants of the vehicle — a male driver, an adult female and a 6-year-old girl — escaped before the vehicle burst into flames.
The driver appeared to be uninjured, but the woman and girl were transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center, a Youngstown firefighter at the scene said.
One witness, an international student at Youngs-town State University, said he was going north on Market when the car cut sharply in front of him and hit the utility pole. He said flying debris damaged the windshield and moon roof of his vehicle.
Other witnesses said the damaged vehicle was run off the road by another vehicle. However, that was not confirmed by city police at the scene, who would not release information about the incident.
A firefighter, at the scene to extinguish the fire, said the out-of-control car snapped off one utility pole a few feet off the ground and damaged another pole a few feet farther north on Market.
