ODNR grants permits for 2 wells in Valley

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has granted permits for two new Utica Shale wells to Chesapeake Exploration LLC, a subsidiary of Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp.

One well, called Henceroth, is in Columbiana County’s Hanover Township, along Lisbon-Dungannon Road just northeast of Gavers Road.

The second well is in Mahoning County’s Goshen Township on the Jarvis farm property.

It is the third well at that location.

ODNR also reported that two wells in Columbiana County — one in Knox Township and one in West Township — are ready to be fracked.

Fracking is the process in which water, chemicals and sand are blasted into rocks thousands of feet below the ground to unlock natural gas and oil.

There are 18 permitted horizontal wells in Columbiana County: four each in Franklin and Hanover townships; three each in Middleton and West townships; two in Washington Township and one each in Knox and Madison townships.

There are nine permitted horizontal wells in Mahoning County: seven in Goshen Township and one each in Milton and Ellsworth townships.
