BOARDMAN

Go for It!, a children’s weight-management and fitness program co-sponsored by Humility of Mary Health Partners and the D.D. and Velma Davis Family YMCA, begins Monday at the Y.

The program for children 9 to 12 includes nutrition classes taught by a registered dietitian certified in childhood and adolescent weight management, and fitness classes taught by YMCA fitness instructors. The goal is a healthy outlook on weight and exercise that will last a lifetime.

The Go for It! program runs two days a week from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday to April 18 (no class April 9 and 11) at the Y. Fitness classes are on Mondays and nutrition/fitness classes are on Wednesdays. Parents attend the Wednesday class with the children for the first half hour; the child then goes to a fitness class while parents stay for a half-hour parent-only session.

The cost is $40. YMCA members may register on-line. All others should call 330-480-3151 or toll free 1-877-700-4647. Registration deadline is Friday.

First Aid training

The American Red Cross of Northern Ohio is offering a safety training package, CPR/AED and First Aid, at several locations from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays through March 24. The cost is $90. To register, call 1-800-733-2767 or to www.redcross.org.

Six-week SlimDown

Humility of Mary Health Partners is offering the SlimDown program for adults, a six-week weight management program taught by registered dietitians who are certified in weight management. Classes are 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 6 to April 10, at St. Joe’s at the Mall, Eastwood Mall behind Sears; and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 8 to April 12, at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. The cost is $40 for new participants and $20 for repeat participants. Dietitians teach lifestyle changes in food, activities and behaviors.

Children needed

Parents of children 8 to 12 who are overweight and/or underactive are being sought for a focus group. The purpose of the study is to get opinions of parents in the development of a weight- management and fitness program especially designed for children. CPR training

American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED training for professional rescuers and health-care professionals is offered at St. Luke’s School, 5225 South Ave., this month. Pre-registration is required. Call 330-770-7165.

Class information includes: First Aid, March 8, 6 to 9 p.m., cost, $30; CPR/AED, March 31, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., cost, $75.

Grant awarded

YOUNGSTOWN

The Episcopal Diocese of Ohio has awarded Help Hotline Crisis Center a $13,000 grant to be used for its Senior Hotline. The grant helps cover the cost of a hot line 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help obtain services to the frail elderly. The elderly population is an at-risk group for suicide.
