Leah Brooks has been named executive director of the YWCA of Youngstown.

Brooks began her YWCA career more than 18 years ago as assistant health promotions manager, becoming assistant director in January 2010 and interim executive director in July 2011, upon the retirement of Connie Shaffer as executive director.

During her time at the YWCA, Brooks has developed and supervised housing, health and fitness, childcare and youth development programs and taken a leading role in fundraising.

“Leah has demonstrated her commitment to the YWCA and a strong belief in its mission. The board of directors looks forward to working closely with her and the staff to provide programs and services to meet the needs of women and their families in our community,” said Fran Curd, board president.

“I look forward to working with the team here at the YWCA and continuing to provide excellent programs for all women and families in our community,” Brooks said.

Brooks added that she will focus during the next year on developing a new strategic plan and on enhancing programs in the organization’s newly renovated, century-old building at 25 W. Rayen Ave.

Brooks, who was chosen from a pool of 33 applicants, has a bachelor’s degree in health promotions and a master’s degree in health and human services, both from Youngstown State University.
