Six people injured in van-car crash
BAZETTA
Six people were injured, including three minors, in a van-car crash at the intersection of state Route 305 and North Park Avenue extension.
The crash was reported at 2:01 p.m. Friday, according to Trumbull 911 Dispatch Center. Police and fire personnel from Champion and Bazetta townships, and three ambulances responded to the scene.
Bazetta Fire Chief Dennis Lewis said six victims were transported to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, four with minor injuries and two with more significant but not life-threatening injuries.
Two of the injured riding in the car are from Newton Falls. A female passenger was ejected from the vehicle. An adult and three minors from Warrensville Heights were riding in the van, Lewis said.
Champion Fire Department Capt. Donald Maffitt said multiple crashes have occurred at what he said is a dangerous intersection.
Youngstown levy
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown Board of Education plans to discuss placing a renewal levy on the November ballot at its July 10 meeting.
The deadline for placing a levy on the ballot is Aug. 8. In 2008, voters approved a 9.5-mill levy that is to expire at year’s end.
Even though no details about a possible levy were available at Friday’s special meeting, the millage will have to be greater to bring in the same amount of money to the district as the current levy largely because of a decrease in many city property values, said Blaise Karlovic, interim treasurer.
Without a November levy, the district will have to start deficit spending in fiscal year 2013, board members have said.
The board approved four pieces of legislation, including filing its five-year financial forecast with the Ohio Department of Education.
New Castle man gets 33 months
PITTSBURGH
A 50-year-old New Castle, Pa., man has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison after he had earlier pleaded guilty to possessing material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor.
U.S. District Court Judge Terrence F. McVerry imposed the sentence Thursday on Carl George, who will be on six years’ of supervised release after he leaves prison.
On Dec. 15, 2009, George possessed videos and still depictions in computer graphic files, whose production involved minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct, the U.S. attorney said.
The images were obtained from a now- defunct members-only child-pornography website. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigated the case.
