Grandparents got the opportunity to experience what an entire school day was like for their grandchildren May 18 at St. Christine’s Elementary School for Grandparents Day.

“It’s a day where kids get to show off for their grandparents,” said Event Coordinator Trish Tudor.

Students chaperoned their grandparents to their classes and showed off their work and achievements. More than 600 grandparents walked through the school’s hallways all as their grandchildren escorted them from class to class introducing them to their teachers and even showing off their art work. Later, they ate lunch, which their grandchildren provided.

“Students decorate and pack lunches for their guest,” said Tudor.

Some grandparents said this event was a tradition in their family. Flo Barber said she never misses the event.

“I come every year,” she said. “It’s tradition and they look forward to us being there.”

Although there was an overflow of people at the event, Tudor said things never get chaotic because students are so well-behaved and stick close to their grandparents.

“I think it really helps to tell children the importance of family,” said Tudor.

Nick Barber, 9, was happy to spend the day with his grandmother.

“It’s awesome. It’s great to have my grandparents come and support me,” he said.
