Poland levy finalized

The Poland school board took the final step to place a five-year, 5.9-mill emergency operating levy on the Nov. 6 general-election ballot.

At its regular meeting earlier this week, the board voted 4-1 to send the resolution to the Mahoning County Board of Elections. If approved, the levy is expected to generate $2,181,867 annually.

The levy would cost the owner of $100,000-valued home $180.68 annually, according to the Mahoning County Auditor’s Office.

Jordan Brown appeal

Attorneys for the boy found guilty of shooting his father’s pregnant fiancee, killing her and her 8-month-old fetus, have filed an appeal of that verdict.

Jordan Brown, now 14, was 11 when he killed Kenzie Houk, 26, at the family’s home near Wampum in February 2009.

Brown was adjudicated delinquent, which means found guilty, in April in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court’s juvenile court.

Lawyers filed the appeal Wednesday with the Pennsylvania Superior Court.

Brown’s lawyer, Stephen Colafella, referred questions to his other lawyer, Dennis Elisco, who did not return a call to comment.

Summer camp in city

YOUNGSTOWN

Associated Neighborhood Centers and Ebony Ladies Golf and Youth Foundations are sponsoring a four-week supervised summer camp from July 9 through Aug. 2 at McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road.

The camp is for children age 6 through 14 and will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Breakfast and lunch will be served each day.

Camp activities include golf lessons, arts and crafts, gardening, computer classes, cooking, health and nutrition and field trips.

Man remains jailed in stabbing case

SHARON, pa.

A man charged in the stabbing death of a Sharon woman remains in jail without bond after his case was sent to a higher court.

Anthony S. Argenziano, 19, of Pitt Street, Sharon, is accused of killing Tracey Goga, 42, who was stabbed between 30 and 35 times. A relative found her dead in her apartment on East State Street June 9.

Argenziano’s preliminary hearing took place Wednesday before District Magistrate Dennis Songer.

Songer found probable cause to send the case to the Mercer County Court of Common Pleas.

Dig in at city hall

WARREN

Historic Perkins Homestead Neighborhood Association is asking for volunteers Saturday to help spread mulch and do other minor landscaping in the beds in front of Warren City Hall along Mahoning Avenue Northwest.

The city is providing the mulch. Those interested should come to city hall at 8 a.m. Bring a wheelbarrow, shovel, pitchfork, rake and other garden tools if you have them.
