Hanna receives degree

Christopher Hanna, of Poland, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences with a minor in Psychology at the June 10 commencement ceremony at The Ohio State University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and also completed a four-year internship as a student coach with the OSU football team. He is continuing his education in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at The University of Pittsburgh.

Notre Dame names Rogers to Dean’s list

Poland’s Christina Rogers has been named to the Dean’s list at the University of Notre Dame for the 2012 semester. Rogers is a 2009 graduate of Poland Seminary High School. Students named to the Dean’s list at Notre Dame must be in the top 30 percent of their college.

Aaron Simko Named Employee of Month

Aaron Simko, a cook at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland for nearly 14 years, has been named Employee of the Month for June 2012. He is the cook on staff through the breakfast hour and his nominator described him as “always going out of his way to help and assist the residents each and every morning, giving them his undivided attention, warmth, and love.”

Summer skating lessons offered

All Saturdays starting July 7 and ending Aug. 11, The Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, in Boardman will offer ice skating lessons. Participants can choose from three classes: basic skills skating classes for all ages, Mommy and Me skating (Adult and toddler to Kindergarten aged child), and a special needs skating class.

The cost is $90 per student and includes six skating lessons, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and a $25 registration fee that includes one year of basic skills membership to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, a personal record book to track progress, accident and injury insurance, and a one-year subscription to the U.S. figure skating “Basic Skills Skating Magazine.” The total cost is $115 for regular programs or $140 for Mommy and Me.

Caswell named to President’s List

Megan Caswell, a Medicinal and Biological Chemistry major, from Poland, was among more than 700 students from The University of Toledo who made the Spring 2012 President’s List. The President’s List recognizes full-time undergraduate students who earn a 4.0 GPA for the semester.

Merriment at medieval faire

The Great Lakes Medieval Faire will have its opening weekend July 7-8 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine. See the three Musketeers fight for fair maidens and the rights of Avaloch. This weekend’s theme is “Fun, Fire, and Fantasy” with such acts as fire-eater/fire walker Johnny Pheonix.

American Business Women’s Association to meet

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet on July 10 at Davidson’s in Cornersburg at 6:30 p.m. for dinner and its monthly meeting. The cost of the meal will be $16 per person.

Clark places third in national tournament

Richard Clark, a recent graduate from Cardinal Mooney High School, finished third in the National Forensic League’s national high school tournament in Indianapolis. Competing in the U.S. Extemporaneous division, Clark’s final round speech addressed the question “Are Super PACs good or bad for American democracy?”

Clark is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clark of Poland and was the valedictorian of his class. He plans to attend the University of Notre Dame and major in Genetics and Pre-Law.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on whole foods for a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle on August 9. Seventh annual auction at Margaritaville set

Easter Seals’ seventh annual “Auction at Margaritaville” will be held on July 20 at St. Michael’s Family Life Center from 6–10:30 p.m. The evening includes a Cheeseburger in Paradise dinner with cash bar available. There will be live, silent and Chinese auctions by ByceAUCTION, and MC Jeff Kelly from WBBG BIG 106.1 will make an appearance. Admission is $20. Ursuline teacher receives Doctorate

Ursuline High School teacher Linda Lucarell Miller, of Youngstown, recently received a Doctor of Ministry from St. Mary’s Seminary in Cleveland. Miller completed a Master of Religious Education degree from Loyola University, New Orleans and a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Youngstown State University.

She has been teacher and catechist in the Diocese of Youngstown, receiving the Golden Apple Award in 2004. She was a recipient of the Dr. Robert Coles Spiritual Growth Institute scholarship at Boston College. Miller was a Triwizard Teacher with a project linking Jewish and Arab students from Akko, Israel, to students of Ursuline High School in 2008 and 2009.

She currently teaches religion at Ursuline High School and is the Liturgy Coordinator there.

Ursuline Center hosts trunk and treasure sale

The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield, is accepting registrations for its annual Car Trunk and Treasure sale July 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For $25 ($30 after June 30) each seller will receive two parking spaces. Inside the center will be a book and food sale.

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown will be selling household products and other goods. There will also be an antique sale for serious collectors. All items are cash payment only. Indoor restrooms will be available. The sale will be held rain or shine, no refunds.

Poland swim club to issue free guest passes

East High School Class of 1964 reunion set

The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18th from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. Wearing your helmet could get you ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children. During June, July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.

Re Arrangements, a home furnishing consignment store, had its grand opening at 15 Stadium Dr. in Boardman. The store officially opened April 1 and specializes in gently-used furniture and home d cor.

The family business is owned by Lexy Milton and Adam Witzeman. The store accepts gently-used furniture and home decor in “like new” condition.
