Guza earns B.S. from Fort Hays

Matthew Guza, of Boardman, has graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s of science degree in information networking and telecommunications. Guza is one of 1,683 undergraduate and 261 graduate students who completed requirements for associate, bachelor and graduate degrees in the spring 2012 semester.

Two Boardman residents named to President’s List

Natalie Scarsella, Multi-Age Education (Pre K-12) major and Laine Vicarel, Doctor of Pharmacy major, both of Boardman were named to the President’s List at the University of Toledo for the 2012 school year. The President’s List recognizes full-time undergraduate students who earn a 4.0 GPA for the semester.

Boardman native receives doctorate from UT

Anthony Pasquale, of Boardman, graduated from The University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree in Doctor of Pharmacy. Pasquale was among more than 2,300 graduates who received their degrees at the University’s Spring 2012 commencement ceremonies.

American Business Women’s Association to meet

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet on July 10 at Davidson’s in Cornersburg at 6:30 p.m. for dinner and its monthly meeting. The cost of the meal will be $16 per person.

Merriment at the medieval faire

The Great Lakes Medieval Faire will have its opening weekend July 7-8 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine. See the three Musketeers fight for fair maidens and the rights of Avaloch. This weekend’s theme is “Fun, Fire, and Fantasy” including such great acts as fire-walker/fire-eater Johnny Pheonix.

Summer skating lessons offered at the Ice Zone

All Saturdays starting July 7 and ending Aug. 11, The Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, in Boardman will offer ice skating lessons. Participants can choose from three classes: basic skills skating classes for all ages, Mommy and Me skating (Adult and toddler to Kindergarten aged child), and a special needs skating class.

The cost is $90 per student and includes six skating lessons, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and a $25 registration fee that includes one year of basic skills membership to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, a personal record book to track progress, accident and injury insurance, and a one-year subscription to the U.S. figure skating “Basic Skills Skating Magazine.” The total cost is $115 for regular programs or $140 for Mommy and Me.

Clark places third in national tournament

Richard Clark, a recent graduate from Cardinal Mooney High School, finished third in the National Forensic League’s national high school tournament in Indianapolis. Competing in the U.S. Extemporaneous division, Clark’s final round speech addressed the question “Are Super PACs good or bad for American democracy?”

Clark is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clark of Poland and was the valedictorian of his class. He plans to attend the University of Notre Dame and major in Genetics and Pre-Law.

Ursuline teacher receives Doctorate

Ursuline High School teacher Linda Lucarell Miller, of Youngstown, recently received a Doctor of Ministry from St. Mary’s Seminary in Cleveland. Miller completed a Master of Religious Education degree from Loyola University, New Orleans and a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Youngstown State University.

She has been teacher and catechist in the Diocese of Youngstown, receiving the Golden Apple Award in 2004. She was a recipient of the Dr. Robert Coles Spiritual Growth Institute scholarship at Boston College. Miller was a Triwizard Teacher with a project linking Jewish and Arab students from Akko, Israel, to students of Ursuline High School in 2008 and 2009. She currently teaches religion at Ursuline High School and is the Liturgy Coordinator there.

The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield, is accepting registrations for its annual Car Trunk and Treasure sale July 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For $25 ($30 after June 30) each seller will receive two parking spaces. Inside the center will be a book and food sale.

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown will be selling household products and other goods. There will also be an antique sale for serious collectors. All items are cash payment only. Indoor restrooms will be available. The sale will be held rain or shine, no refunds.

Bonding with Babies and Books

Babies 6-23 months are invited on Thursday at 10 a.m. to the public library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

TAB Meeting at library

Check us out at the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting on July 11 at 6:30 p.m. We meet the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Newcomers are always welcome. For teens in grades 7-12.

It’s Mad Science at library

Join Dr. Weirdo at the public library at 2 p.m. on July 19 and discover how magical science can be. This event is presented by Mad Science of Northeast Ohio and promises to be fun for kids of all ages.

Launch into rockets

Children of all ages can learn some NASA history and make a paper rocket to launch. Preschoolers must attend with an adult. Only at the Boardman library on July 26 at 2 p.m.

It’s ‘Just a Dream’ with the Mahoning County Green Team

Join the Mahoning County Green Team at the public library in Boardman at 10 a.m. on July 17 as they read “Just a Dream” by Chris Van Allsburg and have fun making a craft. For children preschool to third grade.

Meet Zinc the Zebra

Come to the Boardman library on July 18 at 10 a.m. to meet Zinc the Zebra, who has spots instead of stripes. Zinc wants to teach kids about diversity and about the importance of being kind and sensitive to others who appear different from us. Kids will also make their own Zinc the Zebra puppet.

Zinc is presented by the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and is fun for kids of all ages.

Puppet show at the library

A puppet show featuring “Gunniwolf,” “The Little Red Hen,” and “Who Kissed the Baby?” will be shown at 7 p.m. on July 10 and at 2 p.m. on July 11. This show is fun for the entire family. Preschoolers must attend with an adult. Program for the whole Family will last one hour and a freeze pop treat will be served.

Business Start-Up Workshop

The library partners with SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business, in presenting this seminar on July 16 at 6:30 p.m. Are you thinking about starting a business in the near future or further down the road? Members of SCORE will address key topics for those considering beginning a business: start-up considerations, marketing, finances, and technology for business. The Business and Investment Center librarian will discuss the Library’s sources and services for business start-up and beyond.

There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the public library on Monday from 12:30-3 p.m.

Library online resources are for everyone. Come to the library on Monday at 6:30 p.m. and learn about the many research databases and web sites the library provides for your information needs. This class will do a brief tour of the many databases available, along with a tour of the Subject Area Research, Smart Money, and Your Gov web sites.

East High School Class of 1964 reunion set

The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18th from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. Wearing your bike helmet could get you free ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.

During July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.

Find hidden treasures

The Boardman library invites children of all ages to search for hidden treasure buried in the sand. Find the treasure and receive a hand stamp or a stick. During library hours through summer.
