Veterans appreciation event set Saturday in Canfield

CANFIELD — A group of military supporters is having a Military Appreciation Event beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Veterans Memorial at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

Speakers are Judge Robert P. Milich of Youngstown Municipal Court, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th.

The names of military members killed in action or missing in action, starting from the Vietnam War and wars in the Middle East, will be read and an American flag placed in their honor. Also, their names will be placed a traveling Wall of Honor that will be available for schools and other events, said Rebekah Larson of Struthers, one of the organizers.

Larson, whose grandfather, Harold Larson, and father, Hal Larson of Austintown, served in the military, said the event is a chance for people to show their appreciation of the military.

Beginning at noon, activities include a children’s petting zoo and bounce around, obstacle course, and strong-man competition. Anyone with proof of military service will get free perks throughout the day, Larson added.
