Police: 5 suspected of stealing 9.5 tons of garlic

VIENNA

Austrian police did not need sniffing dogs to locate this suspected heist — 9.5 tons of garlic.

The Austria Press Agency says police stopped three overloaded and sagging vans about to cross into Hungary from Austria on Wednesday and found them packed to the roof with the pungent cargo. After questioning the five men in the vehicles they charged them on suspicion of receiving stolen goods.

Police say the garlic apparently came from Spain and estimate its value at $37,500. The men — all Romanian nationals — were not identified, in line with Austrian privacy laws.

APA cites one officer as saying it was clear what the vans were carrying even before their doors were opened.

“All three vehicles really stunk like garlic,” he says.

Iowa woman running barefoot across US

DES MOINES, Iowa

An Iowa woman is running barefoot across America.

Rae Heim, 18, says what started out as a personal adventure also has become a fundraiser for Soles4Souls, a charity that supplies shoes to needy kids.

Heim is from Caroll, Iowa. She started her cross-country trek in Boston in April and hopes to reach Huntington Beach, Calif., in October. She’s raised $2,900 so far, which she says should buy 2,900 pairs of shoes for the charity.

She told the Des Moines Register last week that she started the run to see if she could do it.

Heim began running barefoot after breaking a toe last year and shedding her running shoes for comfort. She says shoes now are like dead weight.
