A man faces a multitude of charges after he tried to run people over then led police on a chase through Lawrence County, city police report.
Gary James Jones Jr., 29, of North Liberty Street, New Castle, is facing charges that include attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault in an episode that started around 11 p.m. Tuesday at a West Long Avenue address in the city, police said.
There were eight victims involved, including a 9-year-old girl and a 5-year-old girl, police said.
Victims told police that Jones was angry at his girlfriend for talking to his ex-girlfriend.
In the parking lot at the West Long Avenue address, Jones drove his truck into two cars and drove straight at his ex-girlfriend, who was pulled out of the way.
He rammed into a car four times to push it into his ex-girlfriend and another man, according to the report.
His girlfriend tried to flee down an alley with the girls, who are her daughters. Jones chased them in his truck, but they were able to hide from him in some woods, the report says.
Jones came at another victim who tried to help the three in the alley, and Jones’ truck hit him in the leg and ran over his foot, the report says.
Police pursued Jones from New Castle into Taylor Township on U.S. Route 422 and state Route 168 South.
The pursuit continued on River Road, Ellwood-Wampum Road and Oswald Road into Chewton. The pursuit continued on back roads into Ellwood City, then onto state Route 65 to Village Drive, where a relative of Jones’ lives.
He stopped there and police approached, telling him to get out of the truck. He refused, was hit with a stun gun and pulled from the truck, the report says.
He still fought the handcuffs, and his relative identified him for police, according to police. He was taken to Jameson Hospital in New Castle for a blood test, then taken to Lawrence County Jail.
