City mourns Ohio police dog killed in fall

VERMILION, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio police department is having a memorial service for a police dog that died after a falling out of a window during a training exercise.

Saturday’s services are at the Vermilion Elementary School gym and are expected to include other police dogs and their handlers.

The Vermilion Police Department says the dog named Andy fell about 10 feet and landed on its back Monday night.

Police Chief Christopher Hartung tells The Plain Dealer newspaper in Cleveland that the dog died in the arms of its handler who was administering first aid.

The chief says the dog had been with the department for just over a year and was named after a Sandusky police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 2011.
