Board will vote to appoint interim superintendent

No reason has been given for the resignation of the superintendent of Warren City Schools after just one year on the job.

Dr. Bruce Thomas, formerly the assistant and regional superintendent for Marietta city schools, tendered his resignation Tuesday.

Regina Patterson, Warren school board president, declined to elaborate on the situation and said the board will address the matter more fully during a special meeting at noon Thursday.

Patterson said during the meeting the board will vote to accept Thomas’ resignation and also vote to appoint an interim superintendent.

The Morning Journal in Lorain reported Tuesday that Thomas is among seven people to be interviewed for the Lorain City Schools superintendent position.

The board hired Thomas, 55, in June 2011, and his three-year contract, during which he was set to earn $110,000 annually, began in August 2011.

Before joining the Marietta school district, Thomas was an assistant superintendent for Cleveland schools one year.

He also worked for 19 years in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst school district near Cleveland in counseling, career intervention and alternative education, and three years as school-improvement coordinator for the Ohio Department of Education.

During a 2011 interview with The Vindicator Thomas said, “This district [Warren], I think, provides opportunities for me, and with my experience and expertise, I should have more impact on more kids.”
