Scrappers drop third straight

Staff report

STATE COLLEGE, PA

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers struck first in their New York-Penn League game against the State College Spikes on Saturday night, but they couldn’t hold the early lead.

After Mitch Nilsson’s RBI double in the first inning, Mahoning Valley gave up nine runs in a 9-2 defeat in State College.

Marcus Bradley scored that first run and the Scrappers (2-4) got another across in the sixth.

State College plated runners in the second, fourth, seventh and eighth innings. Pirates 2012 second-round draft Barrett Barnes stole his fourth base of the young season. He reached base on a walk and scored. Gourley led with three RBIs.

Bradley has the Scrappers’ only multi-hit game with a pair of singles. Joe Wendle doubled.

Geoffrey Davenport dropped his first decision of the year on the hill for Mahoning Valley. Dalton Friend earned his first win of the year for the Spikes in relief of Jason Creasy.

State College (4-2) goes for the sweep today at 6:05 p.m.
