Scrappers silenced, shut out by State College

Staff report

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ bats never got going on Friday night as they fell 4-0 to the State College Spikes.

Three State College pitchers combined to throw a five-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts. Robbie Aviles (0-1) made his first start of the season and pitched well but took the loss.

The Scrappers got off to a quick start when Jario Kelly led off with a single and advanced to second base on a groundout by Tyler Naquin. Charlie Valerio followed with a single to left field. Kelly tried to score from second but was thrown out at the plate on a perfect throw by Walker Gourley.

That was the last time the Scrappers would threaten.

Clay Holmes (1-0) went five innings to pick up his first win. He allowed three hits while walking only one and striking out five.

Tom Harlan and Emmanuel De Leon followed in relief allowing only two more singles while striking out another seven hitters.

Naquin, the Indians’ first-round selection in the 2012 MLB draft, was 0 for 4 after his 3 for 4 performance on opening night at Eastwood Field.

Valerio had the only multi-hit performance for Mahoning Valley and Kelly, Jones and Garcia collected the others.

Each team left six runners on base.

The Scrappers and Spikes will be back at it tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Medlar Field at Labruno Park in State College.
