Niles officers involved in killing return to duty
Staff report
NILES
Three Niles police officers who fired their guns at and killed burglary suspect Daryl Boggs on April 16 have returned to full duty.
Rob Hinton, Niles police chief, said the three were on administrative and office duty since the shooting, but their status was changed Thursday after the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation completed its investigation into the case and after Hinton discussed it with the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office.
Hinton said Prosecutor Dennis Watkins is expected to comment publicly on the investigation sometime next week.
Niles police said they were alerted at 9:45 p.m. to a possible break-in at 1773 Old Forge Road near Village Center Plaza by a neighbor.
Officers could see the suspect through the windows of the house and could see that he had a gun. About 10 minutes later, Daryl Boggs, 49, of Fenton Street in Niles, went out the back door into a fenced-in yard, where officers ordered him to drop the weapon, Niles police said.
Boggs refused, then fired his gun at officers, who returned fire, hitting him multiple times. Boggs was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Health Center.
The names of the officers have not been released.
