Motorcycle accident kills Cortland woman

YOUNGSTOWN

Tina Freeman, 23, of Cortland, who was injured in a motorcycle accident June 10 in Bristvolville, has died.

Freeman, a 2007 graduate of Lakeview High School, died Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Health Center after a 1:49 a.m. accident in which the motorcycle on which she was a passenger hit a donkey on state Route 45.

She suffered serious head injuries after being ejected from the motorcycle. She and the driver of the motorcycle, Zachary Sain, 23, of Warren, were not wearing helmets.

Freeman worked as a nursing assistant for the Lake Vista Retirement Community in Cortland.

New US citizens

YOUNGSTOWN

Five people became U.S. citizens in a naturalization ceremony this week before Judge Mark A. Belinky of Mahoning County Probate Court. Anthony Vivo, clerk of courts, administered the oath of citizenship.

The new citizens, their hometowns and countries of origin, are: Gurpreet Kaur, Poland, India; Ngan Thanh Tran Wiley, Canfield, Vietnam; Mei Fen Lin, Austintown, People’s Republic of China; Evelyn Rubidia Banos De Pappalardo, Canfield, El Salvador; Panteleimon Georgios Trikilis, Campbell, Greece.

Squirt-gun attack

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

Four teenagers have been charged in a drive-by squirt-gun attack, and police say the parents of one teen also will be charged with disorderly conduct for yelling at officers who were investigating the incident.

The Associated Press reports the incident happened just after midnight early Wednesday.

Police say a woman and her brother were squirted with chlorinated water and called police who traced the license plate to one of the suspects.

Police say the four teens in the car acknowledged wetting the others with squirt guns and were charged with harassment and disorderly conduct. The parents of one of the teens cited also will be charged in reportedly yelling at and insulting officers who were questioning the teens.

Gift to Big Brothers

Home Savings Charitable Foundation donated $10,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley. The money will be used for BBBS of Mahoning Valley’s high- school mentoring program at five area schools.

Boardman places 6th

BOARDMAN

Boardman High School’s Envirothon team placed sixth overall out of 20 teams at a state Envirothon contest June 11-12 at Deer Creek State Park in Mount Sterling.

Boardman High School students Jimmy Tancabel, Kylie Lancashire, Mo Akbar, Kaye Moyer and Luke Carabbia competed in the statewide environmental problem-solving competition. Chardon High School took top honors with an overall score of 482 points. Boardman earned 391 points.
