New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., will celebrate its 88th anniversary at the 10:40 a.m. service Sunday when the Rev. Juliana Hosey of Columbia, S.C., will be guest speaker.

Bishop C. Shawn Tyson and members of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church will be special guests as the celebration continues at 4 p.m. when those who have been members 50 years or longer will be recognized. There also will be a memorial ceremony.

The theme is “Instruments in the Hand of God Impacting the Lives of Others.”

New Bethel was organized in 1924; former locations include 125 Manning Ave. and 209 Reserve St. The church moved to its present location in 1964. The Rev. Lonnie K.A. Simon was called in 1962 and retired after 33 years.

The current pastor, the Rev. Kenneth L. Simon, was called in 1995.

Ground was broken for a new church Sept. 22, 2002, and it was dedicated Feb. 8, 2004.

Morales in concert

World-renowned bass singer Armond Morales and his wife, Bonnie, will present a concert at 6 p.m. next Saturday in the main auditorium of Old North Church, 7105 Herbert Road.

Armond sang with The Imperials as they backed Elvis Presley for more than three years.

Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. Admission is free. The event is open to the public. An offering will be received.

Outdoor service

Pilgrim Baptist Church, 67 McClure St., will conduct an outdoor service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. A picnic will follow. All are welcome to attend. The Rev. Lee T. Rucker Jr. is host pastor.

Installation set

Bishop Elizabeth Eaton of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America’s Northeast Ohio Synod will officially install the Rev. Duane A. Jesse at 5 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road.

Pastor Jesse is only the third senior pastor to be installed in the church’s 114-year history.

Zion is among the largest Lutheran churches in the NEO Synod.

Zion Lutheran Church provides food for the needy from its food pantry and is an authorized food distribution point for Second Harvest Food Bank.

The congregation of Zion has persevered and endured after the indictment and conviction of its former pastor Dale Giffen nearly four years ago.

The Rev. Jason Jablonski, minister at Covenant Life Fellowship, 5900 W. Liberty St., will conduct revival and healing services at 10:30 a.m. and at a special service at 6:30 p.m., both July 1.

Faith gathering

Living Bread Radio, 89.5 FM, will sponsor a free wine and cheese gathering of faith and fellowship from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 7345 Westview Drive.

Bishop George V. Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown will speak at a rally in support of religious liberty at noon Tuesday at Courthouse Plaza.

Catholic bishops in America have called upon Catholics and all citizens to participate in a ”fortnight for religious freedom,” which began Thursday and continues through the Fourth of July.

For women leaders

Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will offer a program on women leadership in the Catholic Church from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 7 led by Sister Christine Schenk.

Sister Schenk, a Sister of St. Joseph from Cleveland, is executive director of Future Church, a national coalition of parish-centered Catholics working for full participation of all Catholics in the life of the church.

Cost is $45, which includes lunch and snacks.
