1912: The Republican National Convention in Chicago nominates President William Howard Taft and Vice President James Sherman for second terms of office (however, Sherman died just days before the election, which Taft lost to Woodrow Wilson).
1937: Joe Louis begins his reign as world heavyweight boxing champion by knocking out Jim Braddock in the eighth round of their fight in Chicago.
1944: President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, more popularly known as the “GI Bill of Rights.”
1977: John N. Mitchell becomes the first former U.S. attorney general to go to prison as he begins serving a sentence for his role in the Watergate cover-up. )

1987: The Ungaro administration is gearing up for a court battle with the Federal Aviation Administration over the FAA’s plan to close the flight service station at Youngstown Municipal Airport.
State Rep. Joseph J. Vukovich, D-52nd, says the Tort Liability Bill working its way through the General Assembly would limit the exposure of insurance companies by cutting the rights of individuals to collect damages.
1972: An aide to U.S. Sen. Robert Taft Jr. reads a statement from the senator to open a conference at YSU on thermal pollution of the Mahoning River saying that people have become complacent about the need to clean up pollution since the federal government became involved in the effort.
