Poland’s Pogacnik earns service award

University of Mount Union assistant professor of accounting Ruth Pogacnik, of Poland, was recently awarded the 2012 David Hoch Memorial Award for Excellence in Service. The award, given by non-profit membership organization Ohio Campus Compact, honors the outstanding work in service-learning and/or civic engagement by a faculty or staff member at an Ohio Campus Compact member institution.

Pogacnik developed the first service-learning pedagogy within the accounting program at Mount Union. She and her students have dedicated many hours of service to community partners, including the Alliance Pregnancy Center, Interfaith Child Development Center and Catholic Charities.

Poland natives named to Dean’s List

Rebecca Hanna and Christopher Hanna, both of Poland, were named to the dean’s list at The Ohio State University for all quarters of the 2011-2012 academic year. In order to be named to the dean’s list, students must be enrolled full-time and attain a 3.5 grade point average.

Two Poland natives graduate from Malone

Poland’s Maggie Conway, Family Nurse Practitioner major, and Patrick Frost, Nursing major, participated in Malone University’s 120th commencement ceremony on April 28 at Faith Family Church. Baccalaureate services were held the evening prior at the Johnson Center for Worship and the Fine Arts.

Poland native maintains perfect grade point average

Nicholas Tesone, of Poland, maintained his perfect 4.0 grade point average for his spring semester of his freshman year at the University of Dayton. Tesone is a Chemistry major and has received a 4.0 grade point average both semesters in college. He was named to the Dean’s List there as well. Tesone is a 2011 graduate of Poland.

Ursuline teacher receives Doctorate Degree

Ursuline High School teacher Linda Lucarell Miller, of Youngstown, recently received a Doctor of Ministry from St. Mary’s Seminary in Cleveland. Miller completed a Master of Religious Education degree from Loyola University, New Orleans and a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Youngstown State University.

She has been teacher and catechist in the Diocese of Youngstown, receiving the Golden Apple Award in 2004. She was a recipient of the Dr. Robert Coles Spritual Growth Institute scholarship at Boston College. Miller was a Triwizard Teacher with a project linking Jewish and Arab students from Akko, Israel to students of Ursuline High School in 2008 and 2009. She currently teaches religion at Ursuline High School and is the Liturgy Coordinator there.

Ursuline Center hosts trunk and treasure sale

The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield, is accepting registrations for its annual Car Trunk and Treasure sale July 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For $25 ($30 after June 30) each seller will receive two parking spaces. Inside the center will be a book and food sale.

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown will be selling household products and other goods. There will also be an antique sale for serious collectors. All items are cash payment only. Indoor restrooms will be available. The sale will be held rain or shine, no refunds.

Seventh annual auction at Margaritaville set

Easter Seals’ seventh annual “Auction at Margaritaville” will be held on July 20 at St. Michael’s Family Life Center from 6–10:30 p.m. The evening includes a Cheeseburger in Paradise dinner with cash bar available. There will be live, silent and Chinese auctions by ByceAUCTION, and MC Jeff Kelly from WBBG BIG 106.1 will make an appearance. Admission is $20. Poland swim club to issue free guest passes

Due to the unseasonably cold weather during the Poland Swim Club’s Open House on June 2, the club’s board of directors is offering a free guest pass to families in the community. Jocko the Clown at the library

Experience juggling, magic, puppetry, music, plate spinning and balloon sculpting when Jocko the Clown comes to the Poland library on July 22 at 2 p.m. This show will be fun for the whole family.

Kinect Olympics at the library

Visit a library near you to participate in the Kinect Olympics on July 19 from 2-3 p.m. Kindergartners through sixth-graders will split into two teams, USA Red versus USA Blue, and battle through different sporting events in Kinect Sports Seasons 1 and 2. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or have never tried the Kinect, you’ll be entertained by the larger-than-life graphics and friendly, competitive atmosphere. East High School Class of 1964 reunion set

The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18th from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. Passport to fishing set

This program provides fishing skills, techniques and information for beginning anglers to start fishing in their own communities. Family Garden Fun set

Plan a drop-in visit to the Family Garden on fair weather Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays throughout June to dig, water, pot a plant to take home or read a book. The programs will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. The Family Garden Greeter will tell you about the plants and has free hands-on activities for children to enjoy with their favorite adults. Play strawberry hide and seek

Children ages 3-5 years will discover strawberry plants hiding throughout the Family Garden today from 11 a.m. to noon. Fellows Riverside Garden will host In the Time of Dinosaurs today from 1:30 to 3 p.m. What kinds of plants are growing in the Family Garden that might have been growing in the time of the dinosaurs? Each child age 6 and up will learn about prehistoric plants and be given a ginkgo tree to take home. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The cost is $10 for residents and $14 for non-residents.

Family tours set

Join us for a guided tour of the Farm on a tractor-wagon ride and enjoy a visit with the animals on Thursday at 10 a.m. Playroom and Gift Shop will be open. The tour is 60-75 minutes, so pack a lunch for a picnic. Reservations are suggested; space is limited.

The Mahoning Valley Rose Society Show will be today from noon to 5 p.m. and June 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Poland library will host a stuffed animal sleepover on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Join us for stories and fun before leaving your special friend to spend the night in the library. Come back the next morning at 10 a.m. for doughnuts and juice to pick up your friend and find out what fun adventures they had after you left. Parents, make sure this special friend is one your child will be able to sleep without for the night. For ages 3 and up. Sign up is required.

Wearing your helmet could get you ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children. During June, July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.

Re Arrangements, a home furnishing consignment store, had its grand opening at 15 Stadium Dr. in Boardman. The store officially opened April 1 and specializes in gently-used furniture and home d cor.

The family business is owned by Lexy Milton and Adam Witzeman. The store accepts gently-used furniture and home decor in “like new” condition.
