Alaska man climbs tree but gets stuck upside down

FAIRBANKS, Alaska

An Alaska man had to be rescued after he climbed a tree for exercise but got stuck upside down by one leg.

Fairbanks firefighters had to use a ladder truck to reach the 53-year-old man, who was dangling nearly 30 feet off the ground. He was uninjured.

Assistant Fire Chief Ernie Misewicz told The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner in an email that the man decided to climb the tree because “it was something he wanted to do.”

He said the man had spikes and a belt around his stomach and that he lost his grip and fell backward. The belt slipped below his waist, flipping him over.

Authorities were alerted by a friend, whom the man called from a cellphone attached to a lanyard around his neck.

A royal return to Pa.? Ambassador says not so fast

EASTON, Pa.

Ghana’s ambassador to the United States says a planned diplomatic trip to a Pennsylvania town isn’t the return of the king.

Ambassador Daniel Ohene Agyekum says John Quartey might be a chief, at best.

Quartey says he became king of the minority Ga people in April 2008. Stories about his planned trip back to Easton, where he graduated high school, drew the attention of Ghana’s diplomats.

Agyekum tells The Morning Call of Allentown that Quartey’s claim of kinghood is “misleading and inaccurate.” A Ga leader in the United States agrees, saying Quartey was elected as chief of a region near Ghana’s capital.

Quartey says Africans lower themselves by using the word “chief” instead of “king.”

King or not, Easton’s mayor says Quartey will get a royal welcome when he comes to town next Friday.

3 Pa. sisters give birth in 10 days — 2 on same day

PITTSBURGH

Lauren Kosalec just gave birth four weeks early, but circumstances suggest the western Pennsylvania woman’s delivery was right on time.

That’s because the 26-year-old West Deer Township woman gave birth to a son Monday, just a few hours after her sister, 30-year-old Kristi Mellinger, gave birth to a daughter during a scheduled C-section. Both gave birth at Magee-Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The births came 10 days after a third sister, 28-year-old Becky Kosalec, gave birth to a girl June 8. Becky Kosalec lives in Shaler Township, another Pittsburgh suburb a few miles from West Deer, where both of her sisters live.

Kristi sums it up by saying, “Everyone’s here, and everyone’s healthy. It’s a blessing.”
