Gettysburg electric map to be auctioned off

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — The light-up map depicting the Civil War’s most important battle is going up for auction.

The General Services Administration says the National Park Service can auction off the 30-by-30-foot electric map depicting the Gettysburg battlefield.

The map had been a fixture at the Gettysburg National Military Park for decades before officials pulled the plug on it in 2008 with the opening of a new museum and visitor center.

The map uses light bulbs to track troop movements during the battle in a 20-minute narrated show. It was built by Joseph Rosensteel, a Gettysburg man whose home had served as the battlefield museum.

Rosensteel’s daughter tells The Philadelphia Inquirer she’s disappointed the map will no longer be under the government’s care and hopes it can be reinstalled somewhere nearby.
