Fifth-grade students at Canfield Village Middle School were fired up and ready to go at the school’s annual Field Day May 30.

With nine classes competing against each other, the students came out ready to play.

Students in each class color coordinated to wear the same color T-shirts to show team unity.

CVMS physical education teachers Bob Tinkey and Tom Nicholudis organized the games for the students and kept score to determine the winner.

“Today is about sportsmanship. You need to root for your team. We are here to have fun,” Tinkey said.

Teams were split into boys and girls and then Tinkey and Nicholudis had the students participate in such games as the over-the-shoulder ball toss, hula hoop relay, scoop ball relay, ball under the chin relay, ball between knees relay, wall toss, and finally, tug-of-war.

As the games came to a close, Tinkey addressed the students before announcing the winning team.

“You all did a wonderful job here today. You showed great sportsmanship,” Tinkey said.

Tinkey then counted down where each class placed, pausing for cheers from each class.

He finally declared Valerie Weingart’s class the champion, with the announcement barely audible above the cheers from the students who were ecstatic about their triumph.
