Bowling event strikes a chord with elementary students

Moving to a new school can be a bit intimidating for some students. That’s why the Poland schools decided to host an event to ease the fears of fourth-graders who will be moving to McKinley Elementary next year for fifth and sixth grade.
Students from North, Dobbins and Union all gathered at Camelot Lanes in Boardman for a meet-and-greet June 1 for a ‘Get to Know Each Other’ celebration.
“Sometimes, it eases their fear about moving on to a new building. It’s one more way for students to get to know each other,” said Marilyn Johnstone, fourth-grade teacher.
The crashing of bowling pins falling, music and roars of children filled the building. Students from all three schools bowled together and ate pizza. They had no problem making new friends.
“They absolutely love it. They are excited about meeting new students,” Johnstone said.
The annual event helps students become more acquainted with their future classmates and encourages them to socialize.
