5-year-old girl dies in Steubenville fire

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Firefighters say a 5-year-old girl died when a fast-moving blaze trapped the youngster on the second floor of a house in the city.

State and local investigators are trying to determine what started the fire Thursday evening at a home here.

WTOV-TV reports the fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. and rescuers arrived within minutes, but they couldn’t save the girl because the flames spread so quickly, heavily damaging the home.

Investigators say seven people were at the house when the fire began, including the girl’s family and a couple who live in an apartment next door.

Assistant Chief Carlo Capaldi of the Steubenville Fire Department says the state fire marshal’s office is helping with the investigation.
