Era Alaska modifies ‘free beer’ promotion

KODIAK, Alaska

It turns out, there is no such thing as a free beer, at least on Era Alaska flights.

The airline had been offering a free 6-ounce beer to adult passengers on certain routes in the state.

But marketing manager Micah Lillard tells KMXT the promotion has to be changed but declined to say why.

The airline now will charge $1 for the first glass of Denali Brewing Co.’s “Single Engine Red” and $1 for each additional drink. The previous promotion offered the first beer free and every beer thereafter for $3.

The drink specials are available on the airline’s Dash 8 routes between Anchorage and Fairbanks, Deadhorse, Homer and Kodiak. The promotion will end at the end of June, but Lillard says they are considering extending it into July.

US sues to force return of dinosaur to Mongolia

NEW YORK

The fossil of a dinosaur that roamed the earth 70 million years ago should be turned over to the United States by an auction house so that it can be returned to its home in Mongolia, a lawsuit brought by the U.S. government demanded Monday.

The nearly complete Tyrannosaurus bataar skeleton was imported from Great Britain to Gainesville, Fla., in March 2010 with erroneous claims that it originated in Great Britain and was worth only $15,000, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

It sold at auction May 20 for more than $1 million even though Mongolia’s president had obtained a temporary restraining order from Texas State Civil District Judge Carlos R. Cortez prohibiting its auction, the suit said. The completion of the sale was made contingent upon the outcome of any court proceedings. The suit did not identify the buyer.

Man to be honored for 2 Fla. rescues in 2 days

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

A man who made two rescues in two days is being honored by the St. Petersburg Fire Department for his lifesaving actions.

Gus Hertz was fishing near the Gulf of Mexico last week when a man suffered a diabetic episode and drove his vehicle into the water. Hertz and another fisherman pulled the man from the car.

A day later, Hertz was called to action again. A small plane with two people on board crashed into the water near his boat. Hertz dragged the pilot and passenger onto his boat and headed to shore.

Lt. Joel Granata of St. Petersburg Fire Rescue says the city’s mayor and fire chief will honor Hertz during a ceremony Thursday.

Hertz is from Virginia and is spending the summer in the Tampa Bay area.
