Girard man helps rescue neighbors from their burning house

GIRARD — A city man is being credited with saving a woman and her two children during a fire this morning.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m., a fire forced Rebekah Cook, 333 Hazel St., and her two children to evacuate to the roof of their home, said fire Chief Ken Bornemiss.

Cook began screaming for help before her neighbor, Craig Smith, of Ward Avenue, responded with a ladder and brought Cook and her two children to safety, the chief said.

Cook and her children were taken to a local hospital for evaluation, but were released shortly after.
