YOUNGSTOWN

A farmers market will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Elizabeth Health Center’s (Belmont Avenue) main lobby off Park Avenue. The public is invited to the event as well as hospital staff and visitors.

Humility of Mary Health Partners, in partnership with the Lake-to-River Food Cooperative, is sponsoring the events for its employees and nearby neighbors financed by a grant from the Farm Market Promotion Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Many of the vendors will accept WIC and the Ohio Direction Card. St. Elizabeth’s farmers markets are scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month through October.

Suspect sought

LIBERTY

Township police are searching for a suspect after an attempted armed robbery at the Dollar General store on Logan Way.

About 8:20 p.m. Sunday, a large black woman wearing sunglasses and a track suit approached a manager before she removed a silver object from her pocket. The woman then put the object to the manager’s back and asked to be taken to the store’s office, said police.

After the manager told her the money was secured in a timed safe, witnesses said the suspect walked out of the store and drove away in a black SUV.

Open house planned

SHARON, PA.

Sharon Regional Health System’s School of Nursing will have an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the school, 740 E. State St., where prospective students and their families can meet instructors and students, learn about financial aid and tour the facility.

Presentations at 5 and 6 p.m. will explain the proposed collaboration between Sharon Regional and Penn State Shenango, which will result in an opportunity to earn a diploma in nursing from Sharon Regional and a subsequent bachelor of science degree in nursing from Penn State Shenango.

Reopening ceremony

LEAVITTSBURG

Trumbull County Engineer’s office will have a reopening ceremony at 9 a.m. today at the new Burnett Street bridge over Duck Creek in Warren Township. The bridge is just west of South Leavitt Road near the Trumbull Correctional Institution.

The bridge is 65 feet long and 34 feet wide, which is nearly double the width of the old bridge, which was 18 feet wide. Funds came from the state and federal governments.

The project, which was overseen by the engineer’s office and Ohio Department of Transportation, was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, the engineer’s office said.

The estimated cost was $555,000, but the actual cost was $457,509, said Donald Barzak, spokesman for Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith. Engineering was done by Thomas Fok and Associates, Youngstown.

Graduation luncheon

WARREN

Four high school graduates who have spent time in the care of Trumbull County Children Services agency will be honored at noon today at an annual graduation luncheon at the organization’s multipurpose room at the Children’s Residential Center.

The graduates are Louis Bendzak of Newton Falls High School, Courtney Applequist of Campbell Memorial High School, Diane Moody of Lakeview High School and Patricia Simmons of Warren G. Harding High School.

Among those who will offer congratulations are Mayor Doug Franklin, Judge Richard James and Pamela Rintala of Trumbull County Juvenile Court, and Probate Court Judge Thomas A. Swift.

Center to open today

LEAVITTSBURG

The Trumbull Correctional Institution and Ohio Department of Job and Family Services will open its O.N.E. (Offender Network for Employment) Stop center at 12:30 p.m. today.

The center, which is inside the prison, will provide offenders access to tools that will help them learn job skills, interviewing techniques and computer programs to help them re-enter society.

Volunteers will provide services at the center, which also will provide information on family-life skills.

Animal cruelty probed

Police and humane agents are investigating a case of animal cruelty in the 5000 block of Southern Boulevard. A man said Saturday a neighbor left a pet rabbit in a cage outside and it had died.

Police found a white rabbit dead in a padlocked cage, and there was one bowl of dirty water and another bowl of rotten food in the cage, according to reports. Officers said the cage had not been cleaned recently based on the large amount feces in the cage. A humane agent was called and removed the rabbit.

Vacant building burns

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a vacant apartment complex Monday evening.

Flames broke out at the Pamela Manor Apartments on Tod Avenue at Roberts Avenue Northwest, across from the former St. Joseph Riverside Hospital.

Fire at duplex

Struthers

The fire department is investigating a blaze that caused about $20,000 to a Seventh Street duplex Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the three-story duplex about 3 p.m. One side of the structure is vacant and the other was occupied.

The fire started on the vacant side. No one was injured. A cause has not been determined.
