Frank Ohl Intermediate School fourth-grade students learned the value of hard work and charity while enjoying chocolate at the same time.

“Who doesn’t love a good candy bar,” Kristine Mazzella, fourth-grade teacher said.

Students read the biography of Milton Hershey, founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company, and decided to become entrepreneurs themselves.

“They became entrepreneurs and as a group of 75 kids they decided to make chocolate-covered pretzels and suckers,” Mazzella said.

While licking their fingers and making delicious treats, students also gained knowledge about science, math and social studies.

“Every subject was incorporated in this lesson. They learned about the four factors of production, [which included] land, labor, entrepreneurship and capital,” Mazzella said.

Students sold their products and as a class decided to donate the profit of $400 to New Lease on Life, which rescues animals.

“We were very shocked,” said Maria Guyan, New Lease on life employee.

Guyan said most of the donation would go toward helping a litter of kittens that was just found.

Parents were thrilled to know their children had been part of the project.

“I was so proud of him and it was nice to see his caring nature,” said JoLynn Protopapa, mother of fourth-grader Anthony Protopapa.

Teachers were also pleased to see their students so eager to participate.

“It’s such a reward seeing them engaged,” Mazzella said. “They will remember this forever.”
