Poland swim club to issue free guest passes
Due to the unseasonably cold weather during the Poland Swim Club’s Open House on June 2, the club’s board of directors is offering a free guest pass to families in the community. The pass can be redeemed for one day of “fun in the sun” at the Poland Swim Club. Call 330-261-3458 to obtain your pass. Local resident named to Dean’s list
On June 8, Poland’s Stacia Ruse was named to the Dean’s List at the College of William and Mary for the spring 2012 semester. In order to achieve Dean’s List status, a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 Quality Point Average during the semester.
Poland natives graduate from Grove City College
Two Poland natives participated in the commencement exercises at Grove City College on May 19. Megan Bennett, daughter of David and Colleen Bennett, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. Libby Peck, daughter of Lloyd and Vikki Peck, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Both were 2008 graduates of Poland Seminary High School.
Bonding with Babies and Books
Babies 6-23 months are invited to join us July 11, 18, and 25 at 10 a.m. at the public library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Jocko the Clown at the library
Experience juggling, magic, puppetry, music, plate spinning and balloon sculpting when Jocko the Clown comes to the Poland library on July 22 at 2 p.m. This show will be fun for the whole family.
Kinect Olympics at the library
Visit a library near you to participate in the Kinect Olympics on July 19 from 2-3 p.m. Kindergartners through sixth-graders will split into two teams, USA Red versus USA Blue, and battle through different sporting events in Kinect Sports Seasons 1 and 2. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or have never tried the Kinect, you’ll be entertained by the larger-than-life graphics and friendly, competitive atmosphere. Come with a good attitude and leave with a new appreciation of all that your library has to offer. For school-age children.

There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the public library on July 24 from 1-4 p.m.

East High School Class of 1964 reunion set
The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18th from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. The cost is $20 per person and you must register in advance. The registration deadline ends August 6th. Passport to fishing set
This program provides fishing skills, techniques and information for beginning anglers to start fishing in their own communities. Come join us on June 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for this fun and educational experience. Fishing equipment will be provided. For ages 17 and under. Lunch will be provided for a fee of $5. The MetroParks will host MetroMutts hike on June 30 at 10 a.m. Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ford Nature Center with your favorite canine companion as we hike the All People’s Trail and explore the center’s grounds. Take yoga at the gardens
Fellows Riverside Gardens will host yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m. throughout June. A blend of energizing yoga styles will help you keep a healthy outlook. Make ice cream at the farm
The MetroParks Farm invites you to make ice cream in a bag and watch a Moo to You video on June 23 at 11 a.m. The cost is $2 for residents and $3 for nonresidents.
Family Garden Fun set
Plan a drop-in visit to the Family Garden on fair weather Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays throughout June to dig, water, pot a plant to take home or read a book. The programs will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. The Family Garden Greeter will tell you about the plants and has free hands-on activities for children to enjoy with their favorite adults. Play strawberry hide and seek
Children ages 3-5 years will discover strawberry plants hiding throughout the Family Garden on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. or June 23 from 11 a.m. to noon. The children will also decorate a pot for their special plant to grow in all summer. Snack and story will be enjoyed along with the activity. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.
In The Time of Dinosaurs set
Fellows Riverside Garden will host In the Time of Dinosaurs on June 23 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. What kinds of plants are growing in the Family Garden that might have been growing in the time of the dinosaurs? Each child age 6 and up will learn about prehistoric plants and be given a ginkgo tree to take home. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The cost is $10 for residents and $14 for non-residents.
Family tours set
Join us for a guided tour of the Farm on a tractor-wagon ride and enjoy a visit with the animals on June 21 and 28 at 10 a.m. Playroom and Gift Shop will be open. The tour is 60-75 minutes, so pack a lunch for a picnic. Reservations are suggested; space is limited.
Partake in T’ai Chi
Fellows Riverside Gardens will host T’ai Chi Step One on June 20 and 27 from noon to 1 p.m. Ease stress, improve health and increase vitality. Stuffed animal sleepover
The Poland library will host a stuffed animal sleepover on June 25 at 6:30 p.m. Join us for stories and fun before leaving your special friend to spend the night in the library. Come back the next morning at 10 a.m. for doughnuts and juice to pick up your friend and find out what fun adventures they had after you left. Parents, make sure this special friend is one your child will be able to sleep without for the night. For ages 3 and up. Sign up is required.

Wearing your helmet could get you ice cream
The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children. During June, July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.
McGuffey Historical Society hosts special guest
The William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society, based in Boardman, will host McGuffey descendant, Shirley Eckley, as a guest speaker at the society’s meeting today at 1 p.m. at the Kravitz Deli, located in the Poland library, Eckley, a retired Youngstown City Schools’ teacher and resident of Hubbard, will recite several stories, based upon the McGuffey Eclectic Readers’ themes of character, citizenship, conservation and the importance of literacy.
McGuffey is known as “America’s Schoolmaster” and was raised in the Mahoning Valley. The local McGuffey Society is the last existing chapter of the National Federation of McGuffey Societies, which once numbered 100,000 members nationwide.

Dining with Diabetes series set
A three-week Dining with Diabetes series of classes will be held June 13 and 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley, 301 W. Western Reserve Road. The program is sponsored by the Ohio State University Extension, Mahoning County and Shepherd of the Valley.
The class is open to diabetics, their family members and caretakers. Those enrolled will be taught how to prepare meals that are healthy, easy to make and delicious. They also will learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise and how to understand diabetes-related medical tests.
The Extension office reminds the public that diabetes is a serious and costly disease. But research has shown that those who learn to manage blood sugar levels eat healthy and exercise regularly can lower the risk of complications and lead a more productive life.
Recipe books and diabetes brochures will be provided. The cost is $30 and preregistration was required by June 1.
Re Arrangements, a home furnishing consignment store, had its grand opening at 15 Stadium Dr. in Boardman. The store officially opened April 1 and specializes in gently-used furniture and home d cor.
The family business is owned by Lexy Milton and Adam Witzeman. The store accepts gently-used furniture and home decor in “like new” condition.

Wound Care center relocates
The St. Elizabeth Boardman Wound Care Center has moved to 7010 South Ave., Suite 6 in Boardman. The new office, at the corner of South Avenue and Trailwood Drive, opened this morning and is convenient to Route 224 and Interstate 680, providing easier access for patients than its former DeBartolo Place office.
St. Elizabeth Wound Care Center specializes in providing comprehensive care for chronic, non-healing wounds using the latest treatments and technologies. Treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique needs and requirements, and complements the care provided by the patient’s primary care physician.
The staff consists of physicians who specialize in the treatment of chronic wounds, nurses specially trained to care for patients with these wounds, and experienced technicians.
