Let ‘deer czar’ do his work

The (Appleton, Wisc.) Post-Crescent: The “deer czar” that Gov. Scott Walker appointed to review the state’s whitetail deer management programs was unwittingly brought into the recall election campaign.

Some Walker opponents charged that James Kroll wants to make deer hunting in Wisconsin look more like it does in Texas, where hunting occurs on private farms, often at a steep cost. They said Kroll wants to turn hunting into a rich man’s sport and that hunters wouldn’t be able to use public land in the future.

Let’s all take a deep breath and allow Kroll to do his work before we speculate on what his recommendations might be.

After all, as he says, “Wisconsin isn’t Texas.” And the quote the Democrats are using against him — that he said “game management is the last bastion of communism” — is from a decade ago.

There’s no evidence that Kroll plans to tell Walker that Wisconsin should “privatize” deer hunting.
